Perhaps one of the most common problems anyone can encounter with their desktops or even laptops is missing or corrupt legacy audio drivers. It is not an uncommon occurrence amongst computer users; in fact if you were to peruse the many tech support forums out there, you will find that quite a number of people have experienced the same problem.

The most help you will get out of Microsoft’s technical support is them telling you to uninstall and reinstall the product, and in most cases, this isn’t a very helpful solution at all.

More often than not, there is a deeper underlying reason that the suggested troubleshooting recommendation might not work. Usually the one constant indication for this particular problem is represented by the yellow exclamation mark against your listed legacy audio drivers in your Device Manager, under the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers category.

The other way of telling that there may be a problem with your audio drivers is the lack of sound from your speakers or your plugged in headphones, no matter how high you’ve set your volume to.

The reason for this problem is due to Windows’ failure to load the device driver, which could be corrupted or missing. Sometimes, a thorough check will uncover certain device profile aspects that may not have been installed in the first place.

What this basically means is that your sound card is sitting redundant within your CPU because your computer’s motherboard is unable to interface with it due to the lack of proper drivers.

A diagnostic run using PC Doctor will most likely result in the program informing you the obvious; that there might have been a problem at the point of installation, and that the drivers may not have been installed properly.

Other diagnostic tools like DriverAgent may be sophisticated enough to run through all of your legacy drivers and let you know specifically where the problem lies, and perhaps even the solution to the problem.

One surefire way to remedy the situation is to replace the missing, incompatible, or corrupt legacy audio drivers with AC’97 Audio drivers.
While replacing legacy audio drivers with universal ones may be a convenient solution, you can try other troubleshooting solutions. One of these solutions is to try and get a copy of the drivers from your sound card’s installation CD (if any).

However, do note that if there was an error at the point of installation, the driver files in the CD may have been corrupted to begin with. In such a case, you should try and hop online and download an updated driver from the manufacturer’s website, usually found under their technical support page.

If none can be found, only then should you replace the corrupt drivers with those of universal ones.

Another possible reason for missing sounds could be internal conflicts with the sound card and the operating system itself. While there may be no universal solution to this particular problem, you could always look online for possible troubleshooting solutions in the many tech support forums found online, and 99% of the time you will be able to find a working solution to resolve the problem.

Troubleshooting problems associated with legacy audio drivers may sometimes be as simple as typing in the proper keywords and looking in the right places for solutions. With the abovementioned suggestions, you will be able to resolve missing sound from your legacy audio device relatively hassle-free.
