Driver Updates
If you are not already aware by now, Microsoft tends to roll out updates regularly, and for good reason. Its flagship operating system – Windows, in all of its many incarnations – is considered to be the standard operating system for many computers around the world today.
As such, there is a need to constantly protect it against any vulnerabilities specifically intended for it; from viruses to security exploits, Microsoft has made every effort to guard users against any malicious intent done to their systems.
Driver Updates
Yet, not all the updates provided have to do with security exploits or malicious programs.
The Windows operating system also requires users to regularly update any drivers that the operating system may require to ensure the smooth operation of every software and hardware active within its system set-up.
Drivers for peripherals and essential components such as the mouse, keyboard, graphics card, and even the motherboard do in fact require constant updating.
The reason for this is simple. First we need to understand what these drivers do.
What Are Drivers
Drivers are specific set of instructions that the Windows operating system requires in order for every aspect of the computer to interface properly with one another, from software to hardware, including display adapters, disk devices and other forms of hardware.
Typically, anything with a .dll extension or a shell is considered a driver, one that your operating system will need in order to launch applications and ensure that the proper and necessary data or code is relayed to any connected hardware in operation.
Because driver files typically contain code, they are more often than not small enough that constant updates from Microsoft are possible.
As new peripherals and new devices are designed and developed over the course of technological evolution, new device signatures are also made available constantly in Microsoft’s updates data bank so that every range of product that is dependent on the Windows operating system is recognised and remains compatible.
Update All Your Drivers
Updating these drivers is in fact quite simple and elementary, especially when utilising the automatic update service provided by Windows. Since the inception of Windows XP, this has made updating even simpler.
How it works is just as simple. If your computer is logged onto the internet and set to update automatically, it will download critical update files from Microsoft’s servers.
After which, the user will be prompted to restart the computer so that the necessary updates can be fully installed and changes can be fully implemented.
Yet some users may still encounter problems with the automatic update service. But even if this was the case, users can still download driver updates for hardware profiles. You can do this by going into device manager and selecting the driver source.
Automatic Driver Updates
The best option is of course to use the automatic update service so that Windows XP and Vista can connect to the proper servers and download the necessary drivers for your system.
If you haven’t already realised it by now, this is necessary to ensure that your computer is running at its optimum level and to avoid program or system crashes that may be due to driver conflicts.
Updating the necessary Windows XP and Vista drivers regularly will give you peace of mind as every component of your system, from software to hardware, will work as they should.
The integrity of your system is dependent on the regularity of your driver updates, so be sure to maintain a regular schedule for updates where your Windows XP and Vista drivers are concerned.
